Am I in Labor?

Conway Women's Health Center

Understanding the signs of labor

As your due date gets closer, it's completely normal to wonder if every cramp, contraction, or change in your body means labor is beginning. One of the most common questions our providers hear at Conway Women's Health Center is, "How will I know when it's really time?"

While every pregnancy and labor experience is unique, there are several signs that may indicate your body is preparing to welcome your baby.

What do labor contractions feel like

Many women experience Braxton Hicks contractions during pregnancy, which can feel like occasional tightening of the abdomen. True labor contractions are different. They become stronger, more regular, and closer together over time. They often continue even if you rest, drink water, or change positions.

If you're unsure whether you're experiencing labor contractions, our team is always available to help guide you through what you're feeling and determine whether it's time to be evaluated.

What Happens When Your Water Breaks?

Despite what movies often portray, your water breaking doesn't always happen as a dramatic gush of fluid. For some women, it may be a slow trickle or constant leaking that doesn't stop.

If you think your water has broken, we recommend contacting our office or Labor & Delivery at Conway Regional Medical Center so we can help determine your next steps.

What If I'm Bleeding?

A small amount of blood-tinged mucus, often called a "bloody show," can be a normal sign that labor is approaching. However, heavier bleeding is not considered normal and should be evaluated immediately.

When in doubt, call. We would much rather answer your questions and provide reassurance than have you worry at home.

When Should I Go to the Hospital?

You should contact your provider or go to Labor & Delivery if:

Your contractions are becoming stronger and more regular

Your water has broken

You experience significant vaginal bleeding

You notice decreased fetal movement

You have symptoms that concern you
